The Grand Canyon State is full of natural wonders, but few cities have a higher concentration than Payson. This mid-sized town of just over 15,000 is a hidden oasis in Northern Arizona, with everything from a 300-million-year-old fossil site to the magical Mogollon Rim.

Mogollon Rim, an escarpment that stretches 200 miles across the geographic center of Arizona, is easily the most famed natural wonder in Payson.

Flickr/Forest Service, USDA Forests and grassland cover the rocky landscape, which began forming 600 million years ago. Hike, big, or drive along a plethora of trails, marveling at the incredible diversity in both animal and plant life.

Just before reaching the town of Pine, you’ll come across Tonto Natural Bridge State Park.

Flickr/ksblack99 This incredible formation is believed to be the largest natural travertine bridge on earth, standing at a whopping 183 feet tall. The park features four trails, some of which lead into the cavernous expanse seen here. With a waterfall, boardwalk, and tons of lush greenery, this is a must-visit when in Payson.

Several different lakes, such as Willow Springs, are popular destinations for fishing, kayaking, and other water recreation activities.

Sitting at an elevation of over 5,000 feet, Payson is located in one of only three pure ozone belts on Earth.

Flickr/Coconino National Forest This makes for some of the best stargazing in the world, with constellations like Andromeda, Scorpius, the Big Dipper as well as many planets visible to the naked eye. Additionally, Payson has a dark sky ordinance, which means light pollution is almost nonexistent.

If you like creepy spots in the woods, Payson has that, as well.

Once an exclusive resort, the Verde River Hot Springs features several bathing areas at the end of a one-mile hike.

AllTrails/Emily Carnevale The water is about 98 degrees Fahrenheit and the main pool offers striking views of the scenic Verde River.

Fossil Creek is said to harbor some of the most pristine fresh water in Arizona, pumping over 1,000 gallons every minute.

Nestled between canyon walls lined with evergreen trees, Blue Ridge Reservoir is a narrow, meandering body of water that offers tranquility and seclusion.

Flickr/Coconino National Forest Can you believe it’s actually a lake instead of a river?

You can even hunt for 300-million-year-old fossils – everything from amphibians to the ancestors of modern crocodiles and dinosaurs – at Paleo Site!
