We all know excessive heat is a regular summertime occurrence here in Arizona, and it’s already here in full force. From Yuma to Phoenix to Lake Havasu City and everywhere in between, cities all across the Grand Canyon State are under some form of heat advisory. Here’s what you need to know:

For the past week or so, portions of Arizona have been under varying degrees of a heat advisory. This comes as Phoenix reached 112 degrees on May 29, tying with the previous record high set in 1910.

As of Tuesday, June 2, warnings are still active for much of the state. The intensity ranges from heat that occurs many times a year, depicted in orange, to rare, dangerous, and deadly temperatures, which have been recorded in the magenta-shaded areas.

Several precautions should be taken to prevent heat exhaustion or stroke. Among the most important is drinking plenty of water, especially before, during, and after exercising outside. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink.

Limit midday outdoor activity, but prepare for temperatures to remain hot overnight. Check on at-risk families, friends, and neighbors at least twice per day.

Cancel outdoor activities when possible, and avoid anything strenuous. In an emergency, always call 911.

Seek out air-conditioned buildings when leaving your home. Keep your A/C running whenever possible.

Keep your furry friends cool, too! Don’t bring them hiking in the intense heat, and always have plenty of water available.
