If you’re an avid hiker, Oregon is pure paradise. We’ve got it all: trails along the coast that provide endless ocean vistas, trails surrounded by lush, green forests, and trails that take you to roaring waterfalls. There’s one place in the state where the trails take you to places that look like they could be on another planet. Check out the Painted Cove Trail at John Day Fossil Beds National Monument:
The John Day Fossil Beds National Monument is a true natural gem in east-central Oregon. Its 13,944 acres are divided into three units: Sheep Rock, Clarno, and Painted Hills.

The Painted Hills Unit encompasses 3,132 acres, and it looks like something from another world. The vibrant colors come from red ash that was disbursed when volcanos in the area erupted 44 million years ago.

It’s important to stay on the boardwalk during your hike to protect the fragile soil here. Make sure to practice the principles of Leave No Trace when you visit.
