The Hawaiian Islands are undoubtedly home to some of America’s best views, with an excess of majestic mountain peaks, striking valleys, cascading waterfalls and pristine beaches. But not all views are created equal, and today, we’re sharing with you one of our favorite roadside attractions that also happens to be home to a truly jaw-dropping view.

As you are exploring the Road to Hana, it’s safe to say that Fagan’s Cross will likely catch your attention. Standing on the summit of Lyon Hill on the Hana Ranch pasturelands across from the Travasaa Hana Resort, this cross sure is unique.

The lava-stone cross was constructed in 1960 in memory of Paul Fagan, who not only established cattle ranching in Hana but also built the former Kauiki Inn, Hana’s first hotel.

In case you were curious, the California native isn’t actually buried here. It’s just a memorial and the man himself is buried at Cypress Lawn Memorial Park in San Mateo County, California.

Many tourists, especially those driving the Hana Highway in a single day, stop and snap a photo at the base of the hill, but you can enquire at the Travasaa Hana for potential access to the cross by foot.

If you do trek up the steep dirt road to the cross, dodging cattle and cow patties all the way…

…you’ll be rewarded with one of the island’s best vistas. The Hana coastline and the vast Pacific sure is gorgeous from way up here.

For a particularly awe-inspiring experience, visit Fagan’s Cross at sunrise. Bring a flashlight if you’re planning to make the trek at sunrise, but otherwise, you’ll want good walking shoes, water, and of course, a camera!

Whether you find yourself staying at the nearby resort or enjoy a reflective experience, a trip to the summit of Lyon Hill and Fagan’s cross can’t be beat. Here, you will experience the true natural beauty of Hana as well as an overwhelming sense of serenity.
