Located in Northern California on the southwest shore of the lake, the view at the top of Mount Tallac is most definitely a sight for sore eyes. Those who endure the climb are treated to a breathtaking view of Tahoe’s vibrant blue waters, California’s rugged Desolation Wilderness, and scenery that extends well beyond the Nevada state line.

Hiking to the summit of Mount Tallac is no walk in the park, but it’s one of the most popular summit hikes because of the heavenly view that awaits. All in all, the trek is just over 10 miles and boasts 3,290-feet in elevation gain.

If you DO go for it (you should), be aware that all hikers are required to pick up a day permit at the self-service area. After you’ve picked up your permit, you’ll be good to go on your journey through lush forests, rugged ridges, and gorgeous alpine lakes.

The trail starts off by taking you through thickets of pine forest before leading you up a ridge that overlooks Fallen Leaf Lake and the rest of Tahoe’s southern shoreline. This is definitely a hike you don’t want to rush, as the views are just too good to pass up.

After you’ve passed Fallen Leaf Lake, the trail starts to wrap around the mountain’s south shoulder. From here, you’ll enjoy inspiring views of Desolation Wilderness, including landmarks like the Crystal Range and Pyramid Peak.
