Northern California definitely isn’t short on fantastic mountain peaks. Mount Shasta, Lassen Peak, Mount Diablo—the list could go on and on. However, one peak that is definitely worthy of your attention is Mount Saint Helena that can be found in Napa, Sonoma, and Lake counties. Standing at 4,342-feet above sea level, the mountain towers over the surrounding landscape. It’s a natural wonder that you’ll be glad you explored. Not only is it a beaut, but the mountain itself holds some fantastic geologic history. Check it out:

At an impressive 4,339-feet, Mount Saint Helena is one of the tallest peaks in the region, and it’s definitely a sight to be seen. In fact, it’s one of the very few mountains in the San Francisco watershed to receive snowfall during winter.

Located within Robert Louis Stevenson State Park, the mountain’s height is immediately evident to park visitors and simple passerby. It towers over the surrounding foothills and vineyards. Boasting five different peaks, the mountain appears as one large, looming mass.

The mountain’s highest peak is known as North Point and it’s also the highest point in Sonoma County. The second-tallest peak can be seen just east of North Point, and is considered the highest point in Napa County.

As a result of these impressive peaks, the mountain makes for a great vantage point for viewing destinations like Napa Valley, Calistoga, Berryessa, and even Lassen Peak to the far north. Hiking trails to Saint Helena’s peaks can be found within the state park.

In addition to its massive presence, Mount Saint Helena has an amazing geologic history. The mountain itself is comprised of 2.4-million-year-old volcanic rocks from the Clear Lake Volcanic Field. The rugged volcanic landscape just adds to the amazing scenery!

Perhaps most fascinating of all, a volcanic eruption at Saint Helena around 3.4 million years ago caused the petrification of an entire forest. Known today as the Petrified Forest, the destination is known for containing the largest petrified trees in the world.
