We have quite a few tunnels here in Texas, but none are quite as interesting as Old Tunnel State Park in Fredericksburg. Between its rich history as a railroad thoroughfare and the millions of beautiful creatures that make their home within its walls, this unique place is worth being added to your 2018 bucket list.
The tunnel was part of the Fredericksburg and Northern Railway until it ceased operation in 1942. It was officially named a state park in 2012.

Since the railroad’s shutdown, more than six million bats — half Mexican Free-Tailed and half Cave Myotis — have made their home here. They emerge at dusk from May until September, so the time is fast approaching to see these majestic creatures take to the sky!

A half-mile nature trail runs through the park, so you can get a bit of exercise and sightseeing in before the bats come out. It is fairly primitive and can get steep at times, but the views make it all worth it.

You can view the bats from either the upper or lower deck. The capacity for the upper deck is 250 people, but only 70 for the lower deck — which obviously means it’s the one you should try for if you get there in time. Apparently, you can feel the wind generated by the swarm of bats flapping their wings!
