Mississippi is no stranger to the big screen. Over the years, several movies, including The Client, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and The Help, have been shot in the Magnolia State. The state’s Hollywood ties don’t end there, though. There are several movies that may not have been filmed in Mississippi, but are set in the state – and that’s exactly the case with We’re Not Married. The romantic comedy from decades ago stars Marilyn Monroe, whose character is crowned Miss Mississippi in the film. Take a look:

Born in 1926 as Norma Jeane Mortenson, Marilyn Monroe reached superstar status by the 1950s. As a California native and lifelong resident, Monroe isn’t normally associated with Mississippi, especially small town Mississippi.

However, in the movie We’re Not Married, she actually played Miss Senatobia. (For those who don’t know, Senatobia is a small town in Tate County.)

Released in 1952, We’re Not Married is a romantic comedy about five couples who discover they’re not actually married because the justice of the peace who presided over their nuptials didn’t have a valid license.

In the film, Monroe’s character, Annabel Norris, is competing in the Miss Mississippi pageant as Miss Senatobia.

Not surprisingly, she wins the crown and the title of Miss Mississippi.
