Minnesota is not well known for its spectacular views from above. Sure, the state is home to some beautiful vantage points. For example, the state’s highest point, Eagle Mountain, offers views from 2,301 feet above sea level. Northern Minnesota’s Sawtooth Mountains, likewise, offer amazing views.

But you don’t have to go up north for an incredible view from above. In fact, one of Minnesota’s loveliest vantage points is in west-central Minnesota. Visit the little-known Inspiration Peak for amazing views in every direction. Here’s what you need to know:

Inspiration Peak is a tall hill in west-central Minnesota, just a few miles northwest of Alexandria. It’s a part of Inspiration Peak Wayside Park.

The hill, part of the Leaf Hills Moraines, formed by glaciers thousands of years ago. It is now one of Minnesota’s highest points, rising 1,750 feet above sea level. It rises 400 feet above the surrounding landscape.

The hill is easy to visit. There is a paved parking lot and picnic area at the base. It’s easy to access from a quiet but scenic county road.

Follow the path – also paved – to reach the top. It is short – around ¼ mile in length - but remember that you are climbing a hill. It may be strenuous for some.

If you can manage it, though, you’re in for a treat. The lower reaches of the hill are shaded in a beautiful forest.

As you climb, the forest will give way to prairie flowers and long grasses. This area of Minnesota, though not as dramatic as other regions, is simply beautiful.

Next time you’re in the Alexandria area, make a stop at this peaceful little peak. It may not be the biggest. But it will certainly live up to its name and inspire you to explore even more of Minnesota’s little-known nature area.
