While there are no wolves in the wild in New Jersey, we are home to a variety of hybrids. Coywolves are coyote-wolf hybrids that are around twice the size of coyotes, with larger jaws and bigger muscles. Wolfdogs are wolf-dog hybrids and can be kept as pets in the Garden State.
While they can be loyal, friendly, intelligent, affectionate animals, they can also be rambunctious, protective, and destructive. They need frequent exercise and do best with experienced dog owners who have the time to care for them. Wolfdogs can make for loving pets, but those considering adoption should be patient, confident, and aware of the challenges of raising a wolf hybrid.
The best way to experience these very special creatures is by visiting a rescue organization. Howling Woods Farm in Jackson, New Jersey is a 501(c)(3) public charity that rescues and places domestic bred wolves, wolfdog hybrids, and northern breeds.
The farm is home to over a dozen wolfdogs, several of which are up for adoption.

While all animals currently at the farm are wolf hybrids or northern breeds, they’ve had coydogs (coyote-dog hybrids) in the past. This handsome guy is Maverick, a 2016 rescue.

If you’re not interested in adoption, you can still stop by and say hi. Howling Woods Farm is open to visitors by appointment only.

They ask for a minimum donation of $20 for guests age 13 and up and $10 for guests age 10-12. Your visit includes a tour.
