There are a ton of great hikes in Maine, but our favorites are the ones that allow us to feel accomplished. These aren’t always the ones with challenging summits, but we do love when we can get to the top of a peak. Even better is when the views are as phenomenal as the ones at the top of this hike!

The expansive views from the top of Mt. Zircon near Rumford don’t come without some effort, but they sure are worth it!

The 5.7-mile trail is challenging, but some folks refer to is as moderate. The route makes its way through the forest, which provides beautiful views even before reaching the summit.

The trail can be found off of S. Rumford Road, but keep an eye out for the sign as it can be hard to see.

Once you arrive you’ll find a gravel trail with a slight incline. Keep going!

But, be mindful as you make your way as there are a number of roots and rocks the more you continue. And, remember that this trail does feel like an uphill climb. Be prepared for some effort!

Continue about 2 miles until you reach the trail sign. This is where you’ll turn left to head upwards.

Along the way you’ll find some beautiful flowers if you make the trip in the spring or early summer.

The path to the summit is narrow, but remember what’s waiting for you!

Once you reach the top you’ll be rewarded with views of the White Mountains. And on a clear day you can see all the way to the state border!
