If you’ve ever visited a dark-sky park or simply spent time away from the hustle and bustle of Michigan’s most populated areas, you know that there’s something undeniably magical about gazing up at a sky full of celestial beauty. Meteor showers have enchanted curious Michigan stargazers for generations, and you’ll surely want to mark your calendar for this upcoming event.

The 2020 Lyrid Meteor Shower is slated to peak on or around April 22nd, though it typically remains active from approximately April 16th through April 25th.

This annual event is beloved among avid skywatchers and everyday admirers alike. Also known simply as the Lyrids, the shower is named for the constellation Lyra.

The Lyrids are fascinating for their natural beauty and history. In fact, they’re considered one of the oldest recorded meteor showers, first seen more than 2,500 years ago.

When you gaze up at the shower, you’ll be viewing glowing debris from a comet called Thatcher, which only orbits the earth once every 415 years. Talk about fascinating!

Whether you’re a first-time viewer or a bonafide stargazer, you’ll have the chance to catch some incredible sights if the skies are clear. Simply select a spot far from city lights.

The Lyrids are visible to the naked eye, so no special equipment is necessary. Bring along your sweetheart for a romantic (and, dare we say, out-of-this-world) outing.

Don’t worry about being blinded by moonlight, either: during this year’s Lyric Meteor Shower, the moon will not be full during the shower’s peak, so visibility won’t be hindered.

When you’re searching for a breathtaking outing to enjoy with the entire family, mark your calendars for this year’s Lyrids and prepare to embark on a cosmic adventure.
