When we find ourselves getting overwhelmed by life’s everyday stresses or simply starting to crave some time outdoors, there’s no better adventure to plan than one that’s secluded and has you looking up at the night sky. In one of New York’s largest cities, you’ll quickly come to realize that Buffalo experiences quite a bit of light pollution. Luckily for Queen City residents, all it takes is a quick drive out to one of Western New York’s rural locations to be able to enjoy the celestial show that the sky puts on for us all throughout the year. Ready to have your breath stolen away? Then mark your calendar, because the Lyrid Meteor Shower is coming!

While this year’s spring has proven to take a bit of a different route than any of us would’ve expected, one thing that you can still count on experiencing this season is the Lyrid meteor shower.

Happening right over Western New York and the rest of New York State, the Lyrid meteor shower is set to take place above us in the night sky between April 16 and 25 this year.

Head out to your favorite dark spot in the city and around Western New York and during this breathtaking celestial event, you’ll frequently find yourself gazing at anywhere from 10 to 15 meteors soaring across the night sky.

One of the things that make the Lyrid meteor shower so special though is the fact that throughout the meteor shower, you’ll be able to see surges that send over 100 meteors across the sky within an hour’s time. Woah!

To those Buffalonians who are anxious to see this event, you’ll want to plan on being somewhere dark around Western New York within the hours before dawn on April 22 - the best time to view the meteor shower.
