There’s never a bad time to get out and enjoy this beautiful state and all of its incredible sights! While you could easily do this by car, we suggest lacing up your hiking boots and hitting the trails, beginning with this enchanting forest hike that is a summertime must:
Tucked away in Custer State Park is arguably the most picturesque of South Dakota forest hikes, which is the Lovers’ Leap Trail.

Beginning with a steep climb and ending with a descent through several creek beds, Lovers’ Leap is a unique and diverse trail that not only meanders through your typical shaded forest scenery but also jaw-dropping summit views.

In addition to beautiful vistas as far as the eye can see, you can also spot such iconic landmarks as the Cathedral Spires and Harney Peak from the tippy-top of the Lovers’ Leap ridgeline.

How did Lovers’ Leap come to have such a romantic name? As Native American legend has it, two lovers met their fate atop the peak, where they voluntarily leaped to their untimely deaths.

While the way it acquired its name is downright depressing, the trail itself is anything but, thanks to its many mature trees, babbling creeks, and lush landscape.

Admission to Custer State Park and the Lovers’ Leap Trail is $20 per vehicle per week and includes not only this hike but everything else the park has to offer.
