Kansas is simply stunning, no matter what area you happen to be exploring. If you’ve been unable to get around Kansas or you’re new to our state, you might not know that Kansas has wetlands. If you didn’t, check this out! There’s a ton to learn if you’ve got the time to share.

Welcome to the Kansas Wetlands Education Center, a very informative station dedicated to teaching all about Kansas’ native wetlands. It’s located in Great Bend, but out in the open where you can really appreciate the view.

Of course, unless you’ve been through places like Cheyenne Bottoms, the Haskell-Baker Wetlands, Quivira NWR or the Marais des Cygnes, you might never have noticed that wetlands are a big part of Kansas wildlife and scenery.

What you also might not be aware of, is how crucial these wetlands are to our native wildlife. Wet and dry periods as well as migrating birds are all important.

The displays at the center are beautiful and informative, detailing the history and structure of how our wetlands work.

Everything is bright and well illustrated, with some areas being interactive, so that every member of the family can learn and stay entertained. It may have started in 1923, but the more recent building is a stunning upgrade from the original program in place.

In any season, we love our wetlands, and encourage people to visit just to see how many birds migrate here each year. You’ll see birds you’ve never seen before and more!

The reason Kansas wetlands are so important is of course the wildlife, but have you seen just how many birds flock here every year?
