There’s no lack of nature in DC. We’re lucky to live in a city with trails, parks, lakes and gardens. Even when we’re surrounded by beauty, it’s worth seeking out those little known spots. Lake Artemesia is one of those hidden spots in DC that is one of the city’s most beautiful natural wonders.

Lake Artemesia is one of those “hidden in plain sight” places in DC. It’s in Maryland just outside of DC and right off the Green line.

It’s a man made lake and park and it acts as a perfect escape for busy Washingtonians who want to enjoy peace and quiet.

There is 1.3 mile flat trail circling the lake where visitors walk, jog and skate.

The lake is next to a peaceful wooded area where there are multiple trails. You can hike the popular Paint Branch Trail or Indian Creek Trail for easy hikes.

In the summer, visitors can fish off the pier. Or you can just enjoy the views and look for wildlife. You can often see geese and ducks swimming in the lake. There are also many different types of birds flying around above or hiding in the trees.

In fact, Lake Artemesia is one of the most popular places for bird watching. There is a birding trail and the Prince George’s Audubon Society hosts bird walks every 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month.
