I don’t know about you, but the idea of heading out of town to a remote and isolated spot in Oklahoma sounds pretty inviting right about now. Of course, we can wait. The small town of Kenton is located in extreme western Oklahoma in the area known as the “Panhandle.” It’s the gateway to Black Mesa State Park, and with only 17 residents in town, there’s not a whole lot going on in this remote town. However, don’t let that stop you from visiting. This area has some of the best nighttime skies and is perfect for an escape from the city.

Located near the New Mexico/Colorado border at the tip of the Panhandle, nearly six hours from Oklahoma City is the small town of Kenton - home to 17 residents.

It’s known as the staging point for Black Mesa State Park and is the only town in Oklahoma that observes Mountain Time.

The town is so small, the U.S. Postal Office is located in a converted trailer house.

Black Mesa State Park is located about 10 miles southeast of Kenton and is home to gorgeous scenery, huge mesas, lots of hiking, and a peaceful lake.

You’ll also find a few bed and breakfasts in the area, so if you don’t want to camp there are a few options for overnight accommodations that are open to the public.

It’s the perfect place to go for a rugged Wild West experience that will take you far away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Just remember to gas up, bring extra supplies, and get ready for a relaxing, isolated retreat.
