One of the best ways to relax in Kentucky is to get outside. Whether it’s summer or winter, there are a number of outdoor area offering peace, quite and beauty. Sure, you could opt for something challenging in order to build up a sweat. Or you could simply take a stroll on this relatively new boardwalk trail leading to beautiful wetlands.
Located in Henderson, the Audubon Wetland Trail is part of the beloved John James Audubon State Park.

Recognizing the need to preserve the wetlands portion of the park, the creation of this beautiful boardwalk trail was intended to allow better access for visitors to enjoy it.

The trailhead for the Wetland Trail can be accessed from the main parking lot. Easy!

The boardwalk trail itself is about 750-feet in length and it meanders throughout the wetlands allowing for viewing of the wildlife that resides within it.

This is a great way to learn about the ecology of Kentucky and offers kids a chance to get up-close-and-personal with a world they may not be familiar with.

The trail begins with a section of about a half-mile. There’s also a one-mile trail here, the Big Island Loop, which goes around the Wetland Trail. There are plenty of signs to help you choose your path and navigate throughout the area.

The boardwalk is easy to travel on if you’re mobile and it offers one of the best ways to see plants, animals and flowers. The area is filled with things plants you won’t find in any other parks, as well as wildlife such as frogs, snakes, turtles and even bald eagles!

In order to preserve the area, the Kentucky Division of Fish and Wildlife is planting more than 81,000 trees to bring the forest habitat back to life. The more it thrives, the more wildlife will be present.

The boardwalk hike won’t take a ton of time, but expect to spend longer than you think as you’ll want to stop and take in the sights. Especially if you spot an animal!
