As the Land of 10,000 Lakes, Minnesota has more than a few excellent beaches to call its own. There are beautiful sections of shoreline in every corner of the state. All are wonderful, but some are more unique than others. One of Minnesota’s most standout beaches is a singing beach on the North Shore of Lake Superior. Photos of the beach are beautiful to look at, but you have to visit in person to fully experience this miraculous spot. Read on to learn about the singing beach in Minnesota.

Because it is one of the largest and most pristine beaches in the area, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources made it an official Scientific and Nature Area.

As soon as you walk up, you’ll know why. Iona’s Beach is strikingly beautiful thanks to the small pink stones that make up the shore. They’re the result of the choppy waters of Lake Superior eroding a nearby cliff.

After many years, the stones have washed ashore. Thousands of them have piled up to create the spectacular Iona’s Beach.

But it’s not just the pink rocks that make Iona’s Beach special. It’s the sound they make as the water washes over them.

When a wave crashes onto the beach, the rocks move against one another to create a high-pitched tinkling sound.

While this is not typically a swimming beach, it is a place you’ll want to stay for a while. Why? The gentle chiming, often referred to as singing, is just not something you’ll hear at any other Minnesota beach.
