There are a lot of abandoned towns in our state, most of which have been covered up by lakes, or washed away by flooding. A few have some remnants that can still be seen. One of which is a spooky small town in Kentucky called Blue Heron.
Blue Heron in McCreary County:
Blue Heron began operations in 1937.
Brian Stansberry It is located on Highway 742 in Stearns and was a productive mining site up until 1962. When the coal veins diminished, so did the town. People moved away, buildings decayed and the mine was almost forgotten.
The area was also known as Mine 18, but Blue Heron stuck.
Brian Stansberry It is located near the Big South Fork River, and was once a part of the Stearns Coal and Lumber Company. Now it is independently owned.
Today, portions of the town have been rebuilt.
Ky Tourism The Tipple, railroad depot, school, a general store and some homes have been rebuilt. (Well, shells of the former buildings have been rebuilt.) There is also a museum with memorabilia from the coal mining days and a small cemetery.
People can camp and visit.
National Park Services The area is said to be haunted by the miners that never really left. It has been said that orbs appear, along with unexplained lights, noises and voices. This has been reported by different individuals over the years.
It is a creepy place at night.
Brian Stansberry If you like camp fire ghost stories, the Big South Fork Railway offers a camp over at the location on one of their dinner train rides. Passengers can sleep on the train or at the coal mine site. It gives you the opportunity to see and experience the possible paranormal activity on the property.
It doesn’t look that intimidating during the daylight hours, but this spooky small town in Kentucky gets pretty creepy at night.
