Hawaii offers a treasure trove of hidden gems, many of which can be experienced via a network of splendid hiking trails. And while many of these trails can be enjoyed freely, some require a bit more planning. The ever-popular Kalalau Trail now requires hikers to make a reservation in advance, according to officials. The intention behind this new policy is to protect the area, which has been made vulnerable by storms and flooding in the past two years.
Intense thunderstorms and flooding dramatically affected the coast of Kauai in 2018, causing officials to reconsider just how many visitors the Kalalau Trail could handle during its delicate recovery.

The park where the trail is located has since reopened, although there is a new policy that limits the number of visitors per day. Additionally, fines are in place for those who attempt to park along the road.

Despite needing a reservation to visit, hikers should not be discouraged from attempting to see this breathtaking natural treasure. Just be especially mindful of the new regulations and leave as gentle a footprint as possible.
