Minnesota isn’t as high as the Rockies or even the Appalachians. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t mountains. In northern Minnesota, low mountain ranges can bring you to heights you won’t find anywhere else in the state. Many great trails criss-cross the mountains, including the Devil Track Trail up the Pincushion Mountain in Grand Marais. Hike up this easy trail for a spectacular view over river, forest, and lake. Here’s what you need to know:

The Pincushion Mountain rises over the land near Grand Marais, Minnesota. There are many trails up to the mountain, each ranging from easy to difficult. The Pincushion Mountain Loop has a moderate difficulty rating, making it perfect for anyone who would like to get a workout as they take in the views.

The unpaved trail crosses through a beautiful stretch of land. It’s around 4 miles in length and is often done as a loop, though many other trails can be accessed from it.

As you hike, you’ll pass through bushy clearings as well as stands of tall trees. The thick forest is full of wildlife. If you keep your eyes peeled, you’re likely to see some of the smaller species. But the larger bears, moose, and wolves that live in these woods are likely to stay hidden.

There’s also plenty of plant life to discover. Not only is the mixed forest filled with different types of trees. But there are wildflowers, mosses, and many other organisms.

As you walk, you’ll soon come to the Pincushion Mountain Overlook. Here, on top of the tall rock, you’ll find some of the best views in the area.
