When you’re craving a hike through breezy mountain air, head to Shoshone National Forest and plan a trek into Silas Canyon. The trail to Upper Silas Lake takes you along a creek and up to shimmering alpine lakes, where you’ll find wildlife and world-class fishing.

Shoshone National Forest is home to hundreds of miles of trails, ranging from challenging hikes full of scrambles to easy strolls on well groomed paths.

One of the best trails in the forest will take you from Fiddlers Lake to Upper Silas Lake! Silas Canyon also offers a view of Lower Silas Lake and Thumb Lake via side trails.

The trailhead, Christina Lake Trailhead, is about 45 minutes from Lander. You’ll have to tackle a few switchbacks to get to the marked beginning of the trail.

Follow Silas Creek for just about 3.5 miles before you discover the crystal clear Upper Silas Lake.

You’ll gain just over 1,000 feet of elevation along this 6.9-mile out-and-back trail. It’s a great place to go for a hike or to challnege yourself for a trail run.

If the weather is cooperative and you still have some energy, add a few extra miles and continue down the trail to Island Lake. It’s a great place to camp before heading back home!
