Do you ever just want to get away from it all – far away? So far away, in fact, that you head to the most remote area in Pennsylvania? Well, when you’ve got that urge, set the GPS to take you straight to Hammersley Wild Area. There, you’ll be miles away from civilization as you explore a vast, breathtakingly beautiful roadless wild area.
You really can’t get any more remote than Hammersley Wild Area in Austin. Officially the most remote area in Pennsylvania, the natural wonder spans more than 30,000 acres.

It is, in fact, the largest area in Pennsylvania without roads. You can’t explore the vast, wild area in a car as motor vehicles are prohibited, but you can set off on an invigorating hike.

At nearly eight miles, the Twin Sisters Trail is rated moderate but usually is not very busy, promising all the peace and quiet you could want.

However, make sure you bring plenty of bottled water and snacks, and be prepared to deal with spotty cell phone service.

You’ll also want to consider wearing pants, as you’re likely to come into contact with an abundance of stinging nettles.

The Twin Sisters Trail meanders through pristine forested area, past meadows, and to scenic vistas. Among the trees you’ll spot include maple, birch, and beech.

Perhaps even better, the trail is predominately flat and well-marked.

Dogs are also allowed on the trail. Just keep your pooch on his leash, and make sure you clean up after him.
