History is celebrated in Cincinnati in many ways and one of the most immersive experiences is with a hike. Our parks often feature areas of the region that have historical significance and you can walk along the hiking trails, imagining what life was like years and years ago. One of the favorite parks where you can walk through history is Shawnee Lookout. Located just west of town in North Bend, the park overlooks the Ohio River and offers three easy trails near Cincinnati. Hike through the woods, into history, and to incredible overlooks of the river valley below.
Shawnee Lookout is a 2,430-acre park that sits atop a hill in North Bend, overlooking the Ohio River and Great Miami River Valleys.
Alltrails/Tom MInges This park is filled with history, as well as three nature trails that are relatively short and easy, making this a great spot for anyone to escape into nature for a bit.
The three trails range in length from 1.3 miles to 2 miles and have moderate elevation changes.
Alltrails/Kelly Hibbett There are a few steps along some of them, but overall you’ll be able to focus on the natural beauty and history of the area, rather than the difficulty of the hike.
All three trails offer views of the river valleys below.
Alltrails/Stephen Kraft The Little Turtle Trail is the longest of the three hikes, but you’ll reach the river view with hardly any climbing (if you go counter-clockwise at the loop).
The views are gorgeous all year long and the park really transforms with each changing season.
Alltrails/Jared Kessans The green of summer is lovely, but Shawnee Lookout is also a great spot for a nice winter day, as the views are even clearer with bare trees.
You’ll also find more views along the Miami Fort Trail, and there is parking available throughout the property.
Alltrails/Steve Brewer There are also playgrounds, shelters, and even boat access to the Great Miami River.
The history of Shawnee Lookout is just as fascinating as its hiking trails and views.
Alltrails/Kevin Krieg There are many burial mounds within the park and along the trails, so be sure to look for them and always be respectful by following the guidance on the signs.
While you’re at the park, be sure to take a closer look at the Log Cabin, which dates back to around 1800.
Google/Brenda Krekeler The cabin was originally down in the valley in Elizabethtown, Ohio, but was donated to Great Parks in 1971. It’s yet another feature of a unique park that’s definitely worth a visit from anywhere around Cincinnati.
