Traveling in an RV is a great way to see the world. Bringing all the comforts of home with you on the road means that you can save on hotel rooms and dining out, but it can sometimes be a challenge to find free places to park your RV. Here are a few tips.

In a bind, you can also legally and freely park your RV in Walmart lots, truck stops, and at some casinos. Always check with local officials or property owners before settling in, but savvy travelers can save big by doing their research and scoping out free parking.

Depending on where your travels take you, there are a few main spots where you have a great chance of nabbing free space. National parks are good spots to check first, as the larger parks often have ample space that doesn’t require a reservation made in advance. Some private campgrounds may also offer steeply discounted spots depending on the time of year.

Another great way to secure free RV parking is to join a travel or RV club. These clubs include Kampgrounds of America, Good Sam Club, Passport America, and Escapees RV Club. By registering and keeping up to date on offers, you can easily snag discounted or free parking at a variety of spots across the country.

If you’re traveling over a holiday weekend, it’s worth checking in with nearby national parks to see if they offer free RV parking for events, holidays, or park anniversaries. You might also be able to “workamp,” or pitch in around a campground or park in exchange for free parking. These workamp programs are typically offered to travelers looking to hang around for more than a weekend, however, so plan accordingly.
