Safety is always a priority, even in a state where the largest city has a population of less than 300,000 people. Living in an unsafe town can be a deal breaker for many families and since Alaska is made up of so many different towns, it’s always nice to know what some of the safest places in Alaska really are.
According to the FBI crime rates from 2013, a little outdated but still mostly accurate, these are the 5 safest places to live in in the cities of Alaska.
- Sitka
Roger W | Flickr With a population of 9,093 there were only 7 violent crimes, 21 burglaries, and 1 report of arson in 2013! Not too bad at all. This is one of the safest small towns in Alaska.
- Palmer
Cecil Sanders | Flickr Palmer has a population of 6,453, the same as Bethel, with only half the amount of violent crimes, 20 to be exact, and 13 reports of burglary. If you’re wondering where to live in Alaska, Palmer should be at the top of your list.
- Seward
Barbara Eckstein | Flickr The popular tourist town of Seward also makes the top 5 safest places to live in Alaska. With a population of 2,749 only 6 violent crimes were reported in 2013 and 1 report of robbery!
- Juneau
Dale Musselman | Flickr I’m proud to say that Alaska’s State Capitol, Juneau, makes the cut for safest places to live. The population sits around 32,946, not a bad size, but there were only 134 reports of violent crimes and 101 reports for burglary in 2013.
- Ketchikan
Ross Fowler | Flickr Ketchikan is as beautiful as it is safe to live in. The population is 8,305 people, close to the population of the North Slope but with a third of the amount of violent crimes in 2013. Not to mention there were only 6 reports of vehicle theft that year too! This town is definitely one of the most peaceful places in Alaska.
Do you live in any of these safe neighborhoods? What other towns would you add to this list of the safest places in Alaska? Let us know in the comments below!

Safest Places In Alaska May 14, 2020 Megan McDonald What is the most scenic town in Alaska? With so many small towns dotted around our giant state, many places bring a lot of beauty to the table. Towns in different climates, and with different geography, offer many wonderful things. If you love the ocean, the scenery from Homer can be absolutely breathtaking. Descending into town and glimpsing the glaciers across the bay from this beautiful seaside spot is awe-inspiring. If you love the mountains, tiny Girdwood lodges itself in the valley beneath the Chugach mountain range. Wherever you go in town you’re greeted by majestic mountains towering over you. If you love endless acres of rolling tundra, or beautiful sunsets over the ocean, Nome, Alaska may be designated as the most scenic town in our state. The truth is, there are far more scenic towns that not, and we are so lucky to live in such a wondrous state. Where can I find more of the best photos of Alaska? If you’re looking for beautiful photos that showcase all the best Alaska has to offer, there are many places to find them. Check out Flickr for an opportunity for locals to show off the best photos they’ve taken of their hometowns and travel across Alaska. Getty Images has some stunning photographs taken by professional photographers, and if you look up local businesses on Facebook, many times they have great shots of the surrounding areas around their business. Instagram also has some wonderful photographers highlighting lovely photos of Alaska, and they are easy to track down using hashtags of a place you want to see in Alaska.
