Whether you’re embarking on a long international journey or simply preparing to hop on a quick flight for business, hunger always seems to strike at the airport. After all, many of us are so wrapped up in packing and rushing through security that we forget to dine before our flights, leaving us on the hunt for food as soon as we make it to the terminal. Unfortunately, many airports offer a limited range of dining establishments and exorbitant prices throughout, leaving travelers with few options for filling up before a flight.

It’s not all hopeless, though: a recent report from travel site Wanderu ranked America’s 50 busiest airports in terms of food offerings, and Colorado’s Denver International Airport reigned supreme.

Flickr/Mack Male To determine its findings, Wanderu considered the top 50 busiest airports in the United States and carefully analyzed the sheer amount of restaurants and the number of positively reviewed eateries within each locale. In the end, Denver International Airport was determined to be the best spot for foodies looking for a bite to eat before or after a flight. In total, the airport is home to a whopping 51 restaurants, 19 of which are considered “highly ranked” with more than 20 glowing reviews on Yelp.

TripAdvisor/Baileyh0 No matter when you fly, you’ll find open eateries and a variety of cuisine options to select from, whether you’re craving breakfast fare, seafood, or something on the lighter side. Local gem Root Down seems to be the most highly regarded eatery in the airport, offering farm-to-table fare and fresh ingredients right in the middle of Denver’s huge travel hub.

Flickr/Bill Dickinson The second and third spots on Wanderu’s food-centric list went to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, respectively. On the flip side, Nashville International Airport was determined to be the worst spot for hungry passengers, offering few well-rated restaurants. Instead, visitors will find a handful of standard fast food options to choose from - not quite an accurate reflection of Nashville’s awesome culinary scene.

Flickr/Kaya Other not-so-great airports on the list included Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport and Southwest Florida International Airport. The next time you’re anticipating hunger during your layover, keep Wanderu’s suggestions in mind.
