For New Orleanians, dining in a historic building is pretty common. From Uptown to the Quarter, there’s a story behind every building, restaurant, cafe, and bistro, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Tucked away on historic Magazine Street lies a little corner store that’s served many purposes over the years, and today it’s one of the most charming and popular eateries in New Orleans. Let’s check it out.

Nestled along New Orleans’ historic magazine Street, La Petite Grocery has been a staple for many locals since they opened in back in 2004.

Like many buildings in the city, this one holds a special history that’s near and dear to many New Orleanians’ hearts.

La Petite Grocery/Facebook The charming little creole cottage dates back to the 1800s when it was the Central Tea, Coffee, and Butter Depot.

The store was a popular spot for locals to stock up on freshly roasted coffee, teas imported from around the world, and local goods like pecans, rice, and beans.

La Petite Grocery/Facebook The store was quite successful until a fire in 1908 swept through the neighborhood and destroyed the building. They rebuilt on the same location under a new name, “Frank W. Mackie Grocer” and operated successfully for many years until it was closed down in 1982.

Today, La Petite Grocery’s name pays homage to the building’s roots.

La Petite Grocery/Facebook In more ways than just the name, La Petite Grocery is also a great place to purchase exotic teas and freshly roasted coffee, keeping the tradition alive nearly 100 years later.
