Gebo is an abandoned mining town that’s located north of Thermopolis. At one time, it was the largest city in Hot Springs County and more than 20,000 people called it home.

Mining flourished from 1907 to 1938, but when the mines closed, most residents abandoned the town. All that’s left now are ruins and spirits of the past.

Because of the difficulties of life in a mining town, most of the graves belong to young children. Visitors report hearing their cries and wails from the graveyard - the chilling sound carries through the town.

Most of the town was bulldozed and demolished in the 1970s, but a few structures remain, and the graves have been mostly left undisturbed.

Today, you can visit Gebo if you have access to a 4x4 vehicle, although the road out is pretty rough. Stop in to see Wyoming history up close and take time to recognize the sacrifices made by families who looked for a life out west.
