Most of us have a soft spot in our hearts for animals. Whether they be the barnyard variety or the more domesticated furry felines and fuzzy puppies, we just melt when we encounter these adorable creatures. In Rhode Island, there is an organization that feels the same way about our feathered friends. This little-known parrot sanctuary is the largest avian rescue group in the Northeast and has saved hundreds of exotic birds and given them new homes.

Foster Parrots established The New England Exotic Wildlife Sanctuary (NEEWS) on a former factory chicken farm in Hope Valley. The 23 acres of land houses a 25,000 square foot facility giving a safe haven to hundreds of animals.

There are both indoor and outdoor aviaries with plenty of space for all of the birds.

The space encourages natural bird activities like flight, foraging, playful interaction and social bonding.

Each bird has its own care plan tailor-made to suit its needs. From nutrition to socialization, each bird has different needs that are provided for at the sanctuary.

Exotic birds are very smart animals and enjoy exploring their surroundings. Toys, branches, and the configuration of the aviaries are routinely changed to keep things interesting for the residents.

The animals are given their outside time too where they can soak in the sunshine and enjoy the fresh air.
