If you’re from New Jersey, you’re probably familiar with Lucy the Elephant. If not, he’s the giant elephant in Margate that’s open regularly for tours. Yes, he…Lucy is a boy! (Lucy is an Asian Elephant and only males of this species have tusks.) Gender aside, the elephant has a fascinating history.

By the 1960s, Lucy had fallen into disrepair and was set to be demolished.

Luckily, the Margate Civic Association, which later became the Save Lucy Committee, raised funds to move and repair the structure.
