As often as we love to talk about the new and exciting attractions and businesses that are opening up here inside of the Empire State, it’s always neat to explore parts of the past as well. Part of the small town of Orangeburg, Rockland Psychiatric Center was once a booming hospital between the early 1920s and well on through into the 1970s.

Eventually closing its doors back in 2010, during the peak of this psychiatric center’s history during 1959, there were more than 2,000 staff members were working here alongside over 9,000 patients.

Unfortunately, due to the lack of understanding mental health back during these times, you’ll often hear stories from former patients and those in town who heard about terrible mistreatments of patients here at the center.

Today, the 600-acre property known as New York’s Rockland Psychiatric Center has become overrun by Mother Nature, and guess what? This site has even been used as a film set for popular shows like Orange Is The New Black.
