Few People Know That Minnesota Is The Birthplace Of Tonka Trucks

When it comes to taking a trip down memory lane, there’s nothing that brings out the nostalgia quite like revisiting a beloved childhood toy. We all had our favorites, whether it was Barbie, GI Joe, or even a simple teddy bear. For many Minnesotans, the Tonka Truck brings out special memories. After all, this classic toy was invented right here in Minnesota. Decades later, it still brings delight for new generations — and fond memories for adults who played with the truck as kids. Tonka’s history began at Mound Metalcraft in Mound, Minnesota. This company was founded in 1946. They originally manufactured other items, but the company quickly began making toys.

In 1955, the company’s name changed to Tonka Toys. The name comes from the Sioux word tonka, meaning “large.” Minnesotans will recognize it from many place names around the state, like Tonka Bay and Minnetonka.

The metal trucks quickly found buyers. Thanks to their large size and sturdiness, they became favorites of many children.

The Minnesota brand was eventually purchased by Hasbro, leading to many more people around the world playing with these special toys. Today, many trucks — both big and small — have been manufactured under the Tonka name.
