Magical places aren’t exactly few and far between in Arizona, but some definitely impart more enchantment than others. Fay Canyon is definitely among the most spellbinding, with views of a lush evergreen meadow guaranteed to take your breath away.

If fairies lived anywhere in Arizona, it would be Fay Canyon. Embark on a short-and-sweet, 2.6-mile trail that leads through this magical rocky outcropping to enter a whole new world of enchantment.

Hidden gems abound along the way, including incredible balancing rock formations. It’s a true wonder how massive boulders like this one can be supported by such a seemingly unstable base.

Speaking of surprises, here’s one that leaves many hikers scratching their heads. This unusual pattern is known as “honeycomb weathering,” which happens when salt and water are present on a permeable rock like granite, sandstone, or limestone.

Provided you stay on the path, the hike is a relatively flat nature stroll. Thick woodland brush lines the path, evoking an enchanted forest vibe that leaves you half-expecting to stumble upon garden gnomes and pixies flitting about.

You’ll come upon a stunning natural arch towards the end, forged by the elements with no aid from mankind. Take in the views from afar before heading back out, or hike into it for stunning panoramic views of the entire canyon. Be warned, though — the latter option is unmarked and involves quite a steep climb, so reconsider if you struggle with balance, have knee issues, or are with small children.

If you decide to brave the ascent, get ready to be awestruck. Iconic red rocks tower into oblivion, creating a scene that simply takes your breath away. Plus, it’s not usually too crowded up here!

Besides the arch, there are several more opportunities off the main trail to explore the area further (at your own risk of course, as the ground is uneven in spots.) Marveling at the lush greenery juxtaposed against the desert landscape is truly an incredible sight.

Don’t forget to watch out for bears and cacti, as both can be found during the hike. Visit the AllTrails page to learn more, and click here for more information about the arch.
