Have you ever heard of Holland Island? This Maryland island has quite the history. Looking at it now, you’d never know that it used to be home to watermen, farmers, and their families. Now uninhabitable due to erosion, this Chesapeake Bay gem sits all alone, except of course for pelicans and other nesting birds. We’ve written about Holland Island before, particularly this house that was once the last home standing on the island. This lone structure collapsed in 2010 and was then demolished.

But that wasn’t the only house that used to be here. Watermen, farmers, and their families lived on Holland Island in the late 1800s to early 1900s. After erosion began to take over the land, families moved inland or to the mainland, primarily to the nearby town of Crisfield.

Many even disassembled their homes and rebuilt in Crisfield, leaving Holland Island looking barren. However, there are still remnants of life, and even death, as shown in this aerial footage.

…Holland Island is also home to two graveyards. The drone footage reveals this one, with tombstones that have fallen over due to the spongy land.

This beach looks like a great place to hang out, but the only things you’ll find hanging out here are swarms of mosquitoes and nesting birds.
