The interpretive center is open year-round, Thursday through Monday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Visitors who make the trip out here will soon realize that this place is far from your average museum. Instead of reading about the historic California Trail on plaques, you’ll actually see it for yourself through an array of life-size, interactive exhibits.

It’s estimated that up to 250,000 people made the trek west on the California Trail between 1841 and 1869. This migration was massive and had a huge impact on the formation of our state. The interpretive center is a place where you can learn all about the trail experience and the people who made the epic 2,000-mile journey.

You’ll find that there are all sorts of things to do at the center, including both indoor and outdoor attractions. Outdoors you can check out life-size replicas of the wagons that early pioneers used on the trail, or explore a to-scale map of the Great Basin in The Plaza.

Be sure to wear your hiking boots! There are several easy hiking trails adjacent to the center. Many of them boast spectacular views of the area’s Ruby Mountains, the historic South Fork Canyon, and the Humboldt River. You won’t be able to resist exploring a few of them.

Inside the Pioneer Museum, you’ll find a more in-depth look at the history of the trail and those who traversed it. Featuring several lifelike exhibits, you’ll begin to really understand what it took to journey across this rugged trail all those years ago.

If you can, try to plan your visit around one of the center’s interpretive programs. During events like the annual California Trail Days celebration, visitors can take part in authentic reenactments and demonstrations of pioneer skills, like how to throw a sling or churn butter.
