When it comes to natural beauties, the Land of Enchantment doesn’t disappoint. Areas like White Sands, Carlsbad Caverns, and Tent Rocks offer some stunning views. But plenty of other areas across the state are also severely underrated in their natural beauty. One such place is New Mexico’s Gila Wilderness.

Nearly a century ago, the world’s very first designated wilderness area was established right here in New Mexico.

Located in the far western region of New Mexico just north of Silver City, this wilderness area appears almost untouched by humans.

The Gila Wilderness was founded on June 3, 1924 at the urging of writer, conservationist, and Forest Service employee, Aldo Leopold.

The creation of the Gila Wilderness and its nearby Aldo Leopold Wilderness sparked a movement to create more wilderness areas across the country.

Chris Adams/Google This eventually led to the 1964 National Wilderness Act to create the National Wilderness Preservation System. Today, there are approximately 800 designated wilderness areas across the country that protect undeveloped land.

Today, the Gila Wilderness is perfect for seeking solitude in nature.
