While you’re out stocking up on toilet paper and hand sanitizer, be sure to grab some cans of bug repellant too. Experts predict that the tick population in Oklahoma this spring and summer will be extremely high because it didn’t get too cold this winter, and it’s wet outside. If you’ve lived in Oklahoma very long, then you know ticks are not only a nuisance, but can carry a variety of diseases. Being bitten by a tick could result in one of several illnesses, including Lyme Disease, Bourbon Virus, and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.

There are a variety of ticks in the Sooner State: the American Dog Tick, Brown Dog Tick, Lone Star Tick, and Blacklegged Tick (Deer Tick).

You’ll find them in pretty much every part of the state, but if you visit wooded or grassy areas, be careful because the number of ticks is much greater. If you find a tick on your body, grab it by the head with a pair of tweezers and gently pull it off. Go straight to the doctor if you notice any itching, redness, or swelling at the bite site.

One of the best ways to keep from getting bit by a tick is to use a bug repellant with DEET and wear light colored clothing.
