We don’t live in a time where everyone is taught in one school all at once, but these teachers and schools made sure that children could get a basic education during the 1880s.

Thanks to national park service volunteers, you can visit on certain weekends to see the school in use, with McGuffey readers, maps, and other exhibits on display.

If you can, wearing old prairie clothing and pretending you’re part of the time period makes the experience so much more fun. Little house on the prairie, anyone?

On weekends during May, June, September, and October from noon to 4 p.m. they do reenactments and history lessons about the schoolhouse.

The school is open daily from May through December from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for regular visits. Even if you don’t visit during the educational displays, it’s still a beautiful building.
