Mother Nature certainly is keeping us on our toes this winter, giving us record-breaking warm temperatures. However, we all know that bitterly cold days still await us. Those days mean a roaring fire in the fireplace, if we have one, or the furnace running to keep us warm. Not all Pittsburghers, however, can afford to heat their homes. Sample delicious soup from area restaurants and step into a 1,000-foot house carved of ice at Cool Down For Warmth in Pittsburgh, a fundraiser for those who need help with their energy bills.

The Sixth Annual Cool Down For Warmth comes to Market Square on January 23 and 24, 2020, in a bid to raise funds to help low-income Pittsburghers with their energy needs.

Sponsored by Dynegy and UPMC, the fundraiser will run from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day and will include a house built with ice blocks. In fact, if you’re up for a challenge, you can get involved in the fundraising, too.

Individuals and groups can participate in Cool Down For Warmth by raising money, which will be matched dollar-for-dollar by local partnering utility companies, through your own fundraising page.

During the two days of Cool Down For Warmth, participants (who choose to do so) will go into the ice house at a pre-determined time, for a half an hour, where they can work toward their fundraising goal.

Don’t worry if you can’t raise funds. You’ll still have the opportunity to help needy Pittsburghers. Both days of the event, for example, will feature Bowls For Warmth Soup Tasting from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

In exchange for a $10 donation, you’ll have the opportunity to sample three soups from participating vendors. Participants include Braddock’s Rebellion, Primanti Brothers, and The Apollo Cafe.
