We love to visit barbecue restaurants every year, and usually choose a few we haven’t been to before (or would like to return to) to visit during travel weather. However, we’ve had some recent recommendations that mean we wanted to update our Only In Kansas readers with another barbecue trail across Kansas worth following this time around. After a few suggestions, here is a 2020 edition of a barbecue trail for Kansans everywhere. We’re ready for the 2020 travel season!
Welcome to 2020 and a new year of barbecue!
Google Maps/OnlyInYourState We’ve had a few places recommended to us to try, and we’ve loved them so far. Because of that, we made this roundabout 2020 Barbecue trail across Kansas for you to start at any point and follow to the end. We’re starting in Sedan just for fun, but you can obviously start wherever is closest to home.
- Buck’s BBQ — Sedan
Google Maps
Buck’s BBQ and Steakhouse Facebook Here at Buck’s, you can park your RV for the night, stay in a cabin, and also enjoy a hot home cooked meal. For barbecue, we love their pork the most, but they treat all of their meat well enough to put it on the same plate with no contest.
- B&C Barbecue — Wichita
Brian Baker/Google
B&C Barbecue Facebook In Wichita you have so many options for barbecue, but one we think you might have missed is B&C. They have great prices, a buffet, and some of the best barbecue around in town, outside of the stuff we make at home of course.
- Plank’s B B Q — Garden City
Plank’s Barbecue Facebook
Tyrone Flowers/Google In Garden City, we have Plank’s, a barbecue spot where rib or brisket dinners will make you feel more than welcome. If you live in the area, they’re also available for catering if you’ve fallen in love with their flavors.
- Billy Sims BBQ — Hays
Jesse Russow/Google
Kerri Ebert/Google Next in line is a name you’ll probably recognize, but we wanted to show them some love anyways. After a football player made his barbecue dreams come true, we’ve been blessed with them ever since. In Hays you’ll find a Billy Sims where you can buy meat by the pound and enjoy every savory flavor on their menu. Though we have a few across Kansas, this one made the most sense for our trip.
- Hickory Hut — Salina
Hickory Hut Facebook
Luke Saenz/Google Here at the Hickory Hut, choosing from ribs, brisket, or a party potato is almost impossible, never mind their amazing Party Potato. If you love both barbecue and loaded baked potatoes, that’s definitely the choice to make.
- JC’s BBQ & Grill — Junction City
JC’s BBQ & Grill Facebook
JC’s BBQ & Grill Facebook In Junction City, a spot called JC’s is covered in corrugated metal but from a good ways away you start to smell what’s cooking up inside. This sports bar serves a great plate of bbq and works well for any travels on this stretch of I-70.
- Blind Box BBQ — Shawnee
Blind Box BBQ Facebook
Blind Box BBQ Facebook Next on our list is Blind Box, a great spot for some good KC style barbecue. They put their own twist on things, but for anyone who doesn’t want to go over to the Missouri side of things, it’s a great spot to get some of those familiar flavors.
- We B Smokin’ — Paola
Greg Eakin/Google
Justin Friedman/Google In Paola, you can watch planes land at We B Smokin’, a barbecue restaurant that serves some serious grub. Not only can you drive in and enjoy live plane landings, you can also fly in if you are wanting a pit stop for lunch.
- Smoked Creations — Ottawa
Smoked Creations BBQ Facebook
Smoked Creations BBQ Facebook Last, at least on our route through things, is Smoked Creations in Ottawa. This spot makes great barbecue all around, and isn’t afraid to change things up now and then. Last time I saw something odd, they were making pulled pork eggrolls filled with all sorts of goodies.
We think each spot is worthy of a visit, and hope you have fun on your travels this year. This barbecue trail across Kansas is sure to be a fun one, even if it’s on the short side! For a link to the map you see here, click here.
