Take a drive to Pepperrell Road in Kittery and you’ll come across the First Congregational Church of Kittery Point. Small from the outside, but big on history, here’s everything you need to know!

A group of local worshippers came together in 1653, but had no real place to practice. To meet the need, the church was built in 1730 to serve this small group.

The oldest in Kittery and among one of the oldest in the state, the church has stood the test of time for nearly three centuries!

Throughout the years, elements were added to the church grounds through the 18th century.

A parsonage house was built in 1729 and a cemetery was added in 1733.

And in 1978 the church and buildings were added to the National Register of Historic Places.

As with all community spaces, changes and upgrades have had to be made, but we love that the inside remains relatively unmodified. You’ll still find the original two-aisle layout and pulpit.
