Cemeteries are notorious for being creepy, resulting in many of them being deemed haunted… but are they really? While some are perfectly harmless, others have gained a macabre reputation for good reason, including the famous, downright creepy and historic Mount Moriah Cemetery in South Dakota:

When it comes to iconic cemeteries, Mount Moriah may just be one of the Top 10 in America, as it serves as the eternal resting place of such famous South Dakotans as Calamity Jane, Seth Bullock, and Wild Bill Hancock.

Located in Deadwood, Mount Moriah’s history is just as wild as some of the Wild Westerners who are buried there, as most of the bodies were moved to the cemetery after being exhumed from the old Ingleside graveyard.

In addition to the likes of Wild Bill and Calamity Jane, Mount Moriah is the burial site of other wild folks, including prostitutes, miners, original settlers, and prospectors.

When you visit Mount Moriah today, you will notice it is split into different areas which include a children’s section (home to countless children who died from typhus, cholera and smallpox outbreaks), Potter’s field (for those with unmarked graves at Ingleside), Jewish section, and the generic Mass Gravesite.

As if the way these South Dakotans died was not haunting enough, the entire Mount Moriah property is said to be legitimately haunted, with several accounts of visitors hearing mysterious voices and laughing children when no one else is around.
