One of the best places to practicing social distancing and enjoy the great outdoors is at Great Salt Plains Park in Jet. You can dig for one-of-a-kind selenite crystals and there is a ton of space for lots of people to enjoy this park. Great Salt Plains State Park is the only place in the world where you can dig for hourglass-shaped crystals. You’ll find the state park about 45 miles northeast of Enid at 23280 S Spillway Drive in the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge.

The crystal digging area is open from April 1 to October 15 from sunrise to sunset. The digging area is a huge open space so there is plenty of space for everyone.

The salt that coats the land is left over from an ancient ocean that once existed in Oklahoma…and it’s so gorgeous! Bring your shovels and buckets along because you’ll need them for digging.

The crystals are found just a few inches under the surface and once you discover your first one, you’ll be so excited!

Hold them up to the light and you’ll see the hourglass shape inside the crystals. It forms in this manner because of the way the sand and water combine together, forming the shape.

Permits are not required to dig and each visitor is allowed to remove up to 10 lbs each plus one big cluster.
