Georgia is the birthplace of Coca-Cola. But yet, few people (outside of the residents, of course) know this to be the case. While Georgians are well-aware of this fact and wear the badge proudly, it likely could be said for anyone else drinking the fizzy beverage that has no clue where it even came from. Perhaps if you’ve visited the Coca Cola museum in Atlanta, you’ve become aware, but do you really know the history behind this time-honored beverage? Let’s go on this historical journey together, shall we?

Back in the late 1800s, the very first glass of Coca-Cola was sold at Jacob’s Pharmacy in Atlanta, Georgia.

The soda was sold for five cents at the popular soda fountain in the city and has since become a worldwide phenomenon.

Coca-Cola was created in Atlanta by a pharmacist named John Pemberton, but Pemberton never realized just how huge this fizzy beverage would be.

Pemberton produced the syrup for Coca-Cola initially and brought the product down to the soda fountain, to which they paired it with carbonated water and placed it for sale.

The new drink wasn’t a smash hit from the start, and in fact, only averaged about nine sales a day during the first year.

This likely led to Pemberton selling a majority of his business before his death to various business partners, including Asa G. Candler who purchased the recipe for $1,750.

Candler, who was an Atlanta businessman, ended up buying additional rights and acquiring complete control over the company to be manufacturer across the country.

Eventually, Candler sold the company in 1919 for $25 million to a group of inventors who decided to expand the soda company into a global enterprise.

Fast forward to today—Coca-Cola is the most widely recognized consumer product on the globe—how about that for a history lesson?

So, non-residents…did you know that Georgia is the birthplace of Coca-Cola? It’s okay if you didn’t, there is no judgment here. But, Georgia residents, if you know of any more things that first began in our great state, make sure to sound off in the comments section!
