The site of the current hotel was originally home to the Ocean Bluff Hotel in 1872. It was eventually redone to become the Breakwater Court in 1914.

In 1935 the Boughton family purchased The Colony Hotel in Delray Beach, Florida followed by the purchase of the Breakwater Court in 1947. It opened as The Colony Hotel in Maine in 1948. Together, these hotels became seasonal sisters, the Maine hotel open in the summer and the Florida hotel open in the winter.

Eventually, The Colony Hotel in Maine expanded and today there are 125-rooms in 5 different buildings.
