We consider ourselves fortunate to have access to so many great beaches here in Northern California, but one destination that you’ll want to be sure to seek out is Chicken Ranch Beach near Inverness. Don’t be fooled by its strange name, this undeveloped beach is like a little slice of heaven where you’re bound to make some fantastic summer memories! Make an effort to find this family-friendly beach as summer heats up.

Finding an uncrowded, family-friendly beach in the summertime can be a challenge, but that’s exactly what you’ll uncover when you visit Chicken Ranch Beach on the bank of Tomales Bay in Point Reyes.

Tucked away from the crowds, it takes some effort to find Chicken Ranch Beach. There are no signs pointing to it, but all you have to do is drive west on Sir Francis Drake Blvd all the way through the town of Inverness. You’ll see the pullout for parking on the right side of the road, right after Tomales Bay Resort.

Once you arrive, you’ll be in awe of this little beach’s serene beauty. It may not be the largest beach in Northern California, but there’s usually plenty of room to lay out, set up an umbrella, and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere.

The beach is located along the shores of Tomales Bay where the water is delightfully warm and calm. It’s also very shallow, making it ideal for wading and families with young kiddos.

Just remember that since this is an undeveloped, free-to-access beach, there aren’t any facilities. That means no restrooms (except for a nearby porta-potty) and no lifeguard. Keep an eye on little ones when visiting Chicken Ranch Beach and always be sure to clean up after yourself.
