One of our favorite things about Maine is the level of quirkiness that exists throughout the state. From giant blueberries at the side of the road to our sense of humor, there’s plenty to make us proud to be here. We’re also a fairly inventive bunch, which is why none of us should be surprised to see that an old chicken coop was turned into one of the best book and antique stores in New England!

It’s virtually impossible to miss The Big Chicken Barn at the side of Route 1 in Ellsworth.

Indeed! This former chicken barn has been converted into a 300-foot long sprawling store with more than 50 antique dealers, 150,000 books, and 20,000 magazines.

But a random junk shop this is not! On any given visit you could find limited edition, leather-bound classics, autographed books, and even books printed on hand-made paper.
