Natchez is no stranger to impressive sights, particularly stately antebellum mansions. But it’s not just the town’s historic homes that’ll amaze. There’s also the Natchez-Vidalia Bridge, which is the tallest in the state. As remarkable as it is tall, the bridge is a true architectural gem. Take a look:

Boasting everything from historic attractions to opportunities for outdoor recreation, Natchez is a small town that’s BIG on things to see and do.

Of all the sights that fill the town, the Natchez-Vidalia Bridge is likely the most recognizable.

As the name implies, the twin cantilever bridge spans the Mississippi River, connecting Natchez, MS and Vidalia, LA.

But while most are familiar with the bridge, many don’t realize it’s the tallest in Mississippi. And that makes sense since its “above the water” height is just 125’, while its total height extends beyond that.

Its name is another aspect of the bridge that’s somewhat of a secret. Though almost always referred to as the Natchez-Vidalia Bridge, its actual name is Mississippi River Bridge.

Work on the original bridge began in 1938 and was completed in 1940. The second bridge was completed in 1938.

At first glance, the two bridges look identical; however, the newer bridge, which runs eastbound, has wider lanes than the original bridge.

A vital thoroughfare, the bridges carry an average of nearly 30,000 vehicles per year!

In 2010, the Natchez-Vidalia Bridge received an eye-catching update – the installation of vibrant lights.

Completed at a cost of $3 million, the bright addition was a joint venture between the city of Vidalia and the city of Natchez.
